GRANDPASS - The Name

Grandpass is a bustling north Colombo suburb. Located within the district of Colombo 14 – right next to the city centre and the Colombo Port.

During the Portuguese administrative period (1505 – 1658), the area was named Grande Passo. The name was anglicised during the British administration (1796 – 1948) to become Grandpass. It was also known as Groote Pas, Pas Nacollegam and Pas van Goensdorp during the Dutch period (1640 – 1796).
